Did you know that the Cancun airport brings you not only to Cancun but to a whole world of Mexican Caribbean destinations? Cancun is far more than just Cancun and we invite you to discover the beauty of the entire Yucatan Peninsula and Tulum is a great place to start.
How to Get to Tulum
Tulum, Mexico is located 125 kms/77 miles south of the Cancun along the modern highway 307. It’s a straight shot south and the trip from Cancun to Tulum takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending upon your final destination. The most convenient way to travel from the Cancun airport to Tulum is with a reputable Cancun Tulum shuttle company like ourselves! Our drivers are safe, reliable and friendly and will have you on the most beautiful beach in the world before you know it.
Where to Stay in Tulum
Tulum has very few large resorts (Dreams Tulum and Gran Bahia Principe Tulum are two beautiful exceptions). Hotels in Tulum are smaller and more intimate, boutique-style accommodations that can range from a shared room in a hostel to a luxurious private villa or cabaña. Travel on a budget to Tulum is easy and popular, inexpensive rooms are available in the Tulum Pueblo (not on the beach but not far either!) and you can immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine. Backpackers flock to Tulum Pueblo to enjoy a laid-back getaway Mexican style!
The hotel zone of Tulum is THE place to be, it’s a destination popular with celebrities looking to get away from it all. The beach in Tulum is truly marvelous, you’ll be spoiled by the soft white sands and mega blue sea. Tulum hotels are really “off the grid”, power is created with by wind, sun or generators and many hotels have limited hours of electricity (perfect for disconnecting from your devices!) While Tulum beach hotels may seem to be “exclusive” and expensive (see “celebrities”), there are still many small, rustic Tulum hotels along the strip, sand floors and mosquito nets that invite travelers of all budgets to enjoy the magic. No matter which Tulum hotel you are staying at, our Cancun Tulum shuttle can get you there easily straight from Cancun’s Airport!
Weather in Tulum
Obviously the Tulum weather is one of the main reasons to visit, particularly for those looking to escape the winter snow and cold. A year-round tropical climate means pretty much every day is a beach day! January is generally the coolest month, with temperatures around 24 C/75 F, that’s still bikini weather! The summer months bring the heat and a lot of great reasons to just float in the sea or a nearby Tulum cenote. Rainy season in Tulum runs from June to November, with the chance of a quick shower to refresh in the afternoon. This is also hurricane season in Tulum and we do advise you purchase travel insurance, just in case, though it’s a great time for travel deals to Tulum!
Things to Do in Tulum
Tulum activities revolve around two main themes, history and nature. The history of Tulum is fascinating, going back a thousand years to the era of the great Maya civilization. The Tulum Mayan ruins bring us back in time to when the site was an important port city for trade and communication. Set on a soaring cliff overlooking the sea, the Tulum ruins are not only culturally important, but gorgeous too! Your Tulum tour guide will share fascinating details of the ancient Maya life and culture as you wander the beautiful grounds and have a swim at the foot of a grand pyramid. History lovers will be delighted to know that the Coba Mayan ruins are very close to Tulum as well and that you can still climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid for breathtaking views!
The natural areas of Tulum are where you’ll discover your wild side! Adventures in the sea from sailing, fishing and scuba diving to just building sand castles on the beach and frolicking in the waves. The Tulum jungle invites you to set your inner Tarzan or Jane free for zipline adventures over the treetops or Indiana Jones style adventures in the incredible underground cave and cenote systems. Nearby Xel Ha Park is a marvel, a natural aquarium perfect for snorkeling and a day full of water fun. The Sian Kaan biosphere is just south of Tulum, a protected area of millions of hectares of absolutely untouched beauty.
